Speaking about the plot, producer Fredrik Wikström Nicastro explained: “The story that Vilhelm Moberg told over 70 years ago is a timeless classic and is more relevant today than when it was first written. In The Emigrants, we follow Kristina (played by Bodil-nominated actress Lisa Carlehed) and Karl-Oskar’s (Gustaf Skarsgård) courageous choice to leave everything behind for the chance to start over and build a new, better life for themselves and their family. It’s a sensational adventure they take us on, which is about finding their place in the world, finding a new home. This is a dream project that we have been developing for many years, and the film is now finally, with this fantastic ensemble cast, ready to be made.” Moreover, the main cast is rounded off by Liv Ullmann and Sofia Helin. Ullmann actually played the female lead, Kristina, in the original 1971 movie but will this time play her mother, Anna.

The Emigrants is a Swedish-Danish-Norwegian production being staged by SF Studios in co-production with TV4/Cmore, Film i Väst, Nordsvensk Filmunderhållning, Paradox, SF Studios Danmark and Fantefilm. The project received support from the Swedish Film Institute, the Nordisk Film & TV Fond, the Norwegian Film Institute, the Danish Film Institute and DR. The feature, set to be distributed by SF Studios in the Nordic countries, will be released on 25 December 2021. Denmark’s REInvent International Sales is in charge of its international sales.
