Transilvania announces dates for a physical 2020 edition

Romania's biggest film event, the Transilvania International Film Festival, is moving to the end of July, for a ten-day 2020 edition. With a smaller number of films set to be screened between 31 July and 9 August in Cluj-Napoca, TIFF 2020 was labelled by the organisers as a “summer edition, featuring outdoor screenings, adapted programming and a vacation atmosphere” in an announcement made on Thursday.

As the Romanian authorities haven't yet decided on new regulations for cinemas, the organisers have announced six outdoor screening locations for the time being, including the festival’s heart, the Unirii Square in the centre of the city, where late-evening screenings of popular films are usually attended by more than 2,000 cinemagoers.

“We are prepared to apply all protection measures adopted by the authorities for open-air screenings, and we hope that the measures for screenings in movie theatres will be confirmed shortly,” TIFF president Tudor Giurgiu said in a press release. The outdoor screenings will be organised within clearly delineated spaces, with chairs set apart from each other, as required by the authorities. Access will be permitted through designated aisles that will allow for triage.

The 2020 edition will also be adapting to the new situation in terms of its programming. “We started off the year with so many ideas for new programmes, but as the size of the festival will have to be reduced this year, we will keep some of those ideas for next year, when hopefully things will have returned to normal. But we can promise an eclectic selection of new titles and retrospectives, a traditional thematic section, a Full Moon selection, national focuses, exceptional documentaries, special events and programmes, as well as a good dose of unmitigated fun. Even if #staysafe remains the order of the day this year, films that take risks continue to occupy a privileged space in our festival,” promised TIFF artistic director Mihai Chirilov.

As for the Transilvania Pitch Stop industry platform, the 2020 edition will provide both online and offline components. One new change is that the festival's TIFF Unlimited streaming platform will make a number of the selected films available during the physical edition.
