The 35mm shoot has got underway for the thriller El corredor nocturno (“The Night Runner”), the fourteenth feature by Gerardo Herrero. Filming will last seven weeks, five of which will be spent in Buenos Aires and another two in the Ciudad de la Luz Studios in Alicante.

The director and producer – born in Madrid in 1953 – has chosen to make a film adaptation of the eponymous novel by Uruguayan writer Hugo Burel. Co-produced by Spanish companies Castafiore Films and Tornasol Films and Argentina’s Zona Audiovisual and Haddock Films, the title once again highlights the director’s interest in collaborating with South American countries.

The film – written and adapted by Argentina’s Nicolás Saad – centres on the character of Eduardo, an insurance company manager who is under pressure. In an airport one day, on his return from a disastrous business trip, he meets a mysterious man who introduces himself as a friend and encourages him to change his lifestyle and be free.

This individual harasses him and goes to unexpected lengths to achieve his aim. As a result, Eduardo’s life starts to descend into ambiguous and uncertain territory. The cast is headed by Argentinean actors Leonardo Sbaraglia and Miguel Angel Solá, whereas the technical crew are mainly Spanish.

The film thus marks the return of Herrero, one of the most important figures in Spanish film. He is the former president of the Film Academy and the FAPAE (Federation of Producers), although he is better known for his work as a producer, having collaborated with renowned directors such as Manoel de Oliveira (No, or the Vain Glory of Command, 1990), Ken Loach (Land and Freedom, 1995), Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón (Things I Left in Havana, 1997), Agustín Díaz Yanes (No News from God, 2001), Eric Rohmer (Triple Agent, 2004) and Álex de la Iglesia (The Oxford Murders [+see also:
