La Opción Cero (a co-production between Cuba, Brazil and Colombia), directed by Marcel Beltrán, has picked up the Jury Prize for Best Documentary (endowed with €6,000) at the 15th MiradasDoc, a gathering that unspooled from 4-12 March in Guía de Isora (Tenerife).

by Loup Bureau – shot in Donbas and showing Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russian-backed separatists, as diplomats negotiate shaky ceasefires – scooped the Award for Best Feature Debut (worth €4,000). The filmmaker currently finds himself in the war zone and asked the festival team to pass on a message to the audiences watching the screenings: that they “should be able to appreciate this testimony showing the horrific events that the country is going through”.

by Abdallah Al-Khatib made off with a Jury Special Mention. Lastly, the short film Descartes by Concha Barquero and Alejandro Alvarado – which lifts the lid on the remaining footage from the censored film Rocío – went home with the Award for Best Spanish Documentary (to the tune of €4,000).

Meanwhile, at the 15th edition of the MiradasDoc Market, which was held in a virtual format, like last year, with projects scattered across the DocSur, Afrolatam, Anidoc Sur and Debut WIP selections, a record number of meetings were organised, in comparison to prior editions. The Ugandan-South African project The Woman Who Poked the Leopard by Patience Nitumwesiga was deemed deserving of the Development Award (worth €3,000). On the other hand, the Afrolatam Award was bestowed upon Afromilonga (Argentina/Uruguay/Angola/Kenya) by Alejandro Espolsino, María Eugenia Lombardi, Mawete Paciencia and Leticia Rodríguez Taboada.

The projects The Vanished (Chile) and Buscando las palabras (Germany/Colombia) were granted the DocMontevideo Award, which allows them to take part in the Uruguayan event. The former title, by Sophie Chevalier-Zeballos and Omar Zeballos, picked up the Treeline Distribution Award, while the latter, by Joel Stängle, earned itself the DocsMX Award (consisting of a visit to the Mexican gathering’s lab), which was also presented to Un hogar sin armarios by Spaniard Eduardo Cubillo.

The SAP Ficcali Award (an Ibermedia grant to take part in the producers’ room at the Cali Film Festival) went to Carmela y los Caminantes (Ecuador) by Esteban Coloma and Luis Herrera, and Carabalí (Mexico/Colombia) by Medhin Tewolde Serrano, a project that also netted the Diáspora Conecta Award, which allows it to take part in the Diáspora Lab Roteiro, which the Brazilian organisation will set in motion this coming August.

Finally, the Durban Film Market Award was given to The Camera Never Cries (Sudan) by Elsadig Abdelgayoum and Abuzar Adam; the DOCSP Award went to the project Minha carne sabe (Brazil/Guinea-Bissau) by Zica Pires and Simone Giovine; and the MiradasDoc-Subbabel Award (for the subtitling of a film) was won by the project La fábula de la tortuga y la flor by Carolina Campo Lupo (Uruguay).
