Very few surprises were in store at the 36th edition of the Goya Awards ceremony, which ended up being just as tedious and overlong as other recent editions. During this year’s presentation of the prizes handed out by the Spanish Academy of Film Arts and Sciences, the big favourite (given that it started off the night with a record 20 nominations), The Good Boss [+leggi anche:

scheda film], scooped six Goyas: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay (with both jobs having been fulfilled by Fernando León de Aranoa), Best Lead Actor (for the chameleonic Javier Bardem), Best Original Score and Best Editing.

scheda film], which didn’t go home with a single award from among the eight it was in the running for, despite the fact that its lead, Penélope Cruz, is Oscar-nominated for her work on the movie (see the news), as is the composer of its soundtrack, Alberto Iglesias, who didn’t even get a Goya nod for his efforts (although he did for Maixabel). Nonetheless, Pedro Almodóvar and his current pet actress were in attendance in Valencia – where this year’s ceremony was held – to hand out the first-ever International Goya to Australia’s Cate Blanchett, who has boarded the new project by the Manchegan filmmaker, A Manual for Cleaning Women, based on the collection of short stories of the same name by late author Lucia Berlin. A very smart start to a great promotional campaign.
