The 59th edition of the Gijón International Film Festival is once again about to kick off an in-person iteration of its FICX Pro industry sidebar, which began in 2017 under the Industry Days banner and has now established itself as a meeting point for audiovisual professionals. Its aim is to stimulate creation, foster the development of works and facilitate their circulation. The rendezvous will be held from 22-25 November this year.

The FICX PUSH PLAY Work-in-Progress strand will present projects currently in development that were selected following this year’s call: Cuando toco un animal, a film about turbulent young love, helmed by Galician director Ángel FilgueiraEl mapa para tocarte, a family-focused creative documentary by Mercedes AfonsoH by Carlos Pardo Ros, a mystery set during the San Fermín festivities in Pamplona; Puerperio, a medium-length film directed and produced by Pili Álvarez; and Sobre las nubes, stories from the city, as told by Argentina’s María Aparicio. They will all be vying for the DCP Deluxe Work-in-Progress Awards, consisting of DCP mastering, and the OpenECAM Work-in-Progress Award, which enables the winner to use the facilities and equipment at the Film and Audiovisual School of the Community of Madrid.

The international jury that will be deciding which projects are deserving of the PUSH PLAY Work-in-Progress Awards is made up of Dimitris Kerkinos, an essay writer and programmer at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival; Roger Koza, a critic, programmer and artistic director of various international festivals; and screenwriter-author-producer Michael Zam, whose work has earned him various Emmy nominations.

Also set to be presented are the projects at the development and pre-production stage selected following their submission for the FICX LAB call. They will be going head to head for the OpenECAM Work-in-Progress Award and a €1,000 incentive provided by the Asturias Paraíso Natural Film Commission. They are: Campolivar, a short film by Alicia Moncholí; Hablar de estas cosas, directed and produced by Fernando Lorenzana, about two girlfriends at loggerheads, now brought together in a single space; El fin de todas las cosas, half an hour of non-fiction masterminded by Diego Flórez Álvarez (co-produced by the director and Luis Aceituno); Toda la noche lloviendo, a thriller by Paula Vicario and Ana Sierra set in Asturias; Cartografías del monte, an ethnographic documentary with a 20-minute running time, directed and produced by Samuel Fernandi; and, out of competition, Trashumancia, a medium-length film by Penélope Paniagua Molina, which she wrote and is producing herself.

The FICX Pro LAB jury is made up of Silvia Cruz, a film producer and distributor at Vitrine Films; Gloria Benito, a programmer at the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival; and Analía G Alonso, a Galician film producer.

In addition, this year’s line-up includes an online pitching session for the projects selected as part of European Film Promotion’s 2021 Future Frames programme (read our coverage here). Also, there will be some interesting talks on the menu: for example, one will tackle the funding opportunities provided by Creative Europe - MEDIA; another meeting will home in on the ICAA support available for organising festivals in Spain; and the Association of Male and Female Directors ACCIÓN will discuss its key strategies and activities aimed at improving the situation of this particular profession in Spain.
