Panah Panahi’s Hit the Road has been presented with the Best Film Award in the Official Competition of the 65th BFI London Film Festival. The road movie sees a family of four take their dog on a journey through Iran to the sounds of 1970s Iranian pop. Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska, the Official Competition jury president, said: “The Best Film Award recognises inspiring and distinctive filmmaking that captures the essence of cinema. The essence of life! At all times in cinema history, but perhaps especially during a pandemic, we are looking for ways to connect to life. We have opted for a film that made us laugh and cry and feel alive.”

The Grierson Award, handed to the top film in the Documentary Competition, was bestowed upon Liz Garbus’s Becoming Cousteau, a riveting doc giving a fresh take on the life of inspiring inventor, explorer, environmentalist and filmmaker Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Kim Longinotto, the Documentary Competition jury president, said: “The film was a fascinating look at the life of Jacques Cousteau, but more importantly, it highlights the most pressing issue of our time, climate change, and urges us all to take action now.” There was also a Special Commendation for Sergei Loznitsa’s harrowing Babi Yar.
