Today marks the start of the fourth edition of Canneseries, Cannes’ International Series Festival, which will descend on the Croisette from 8-13 October, specifically in the Louis Lumière Grand Auditorium and the Espace Miramar. Standing out particularly on the menu are two competitions, one dedicated to long-form series and the other to short-form ones. The former, which will boast a jury chaired by Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones), comprises ten titles, seven of which will be unveiled as world premieres and three as international ones.

), José Garcia, Lambert Wilson and Ana Girardot. Directed by Jérôme Salle, Antoine Blossier and Frédéric Jardin, the series created by Olivier Dujols and Juliette Soubrier (who co-wrote the screenplay with François Uzan, Thibault Valetoux, Julien Anscutter and Sabine Dabadie) is set in 1965 in the midst of the Cold War and follows a French scientist, Francis Mareuil, as he begins working as a spy. While working for the French Secret Service and the CIA, Mareuil meets Lyudmila Goloubeva, a pianist forced to work for the KGB. A romance blossoms between them, but neither can be sure of what is an expression of their true feelings, and what is the fruit of political shenanigans.

Also locking horns (and enjoying their world premieres) are the Italian series Christian [+leggi anche:

(6x50 minutes – staged by Sky Studios and Lucky Red for Sky) and Norway’s Countrymen (8x45 minutes – produced by Rubicon and Arte France for NRK and Arte – see the news), while the shows set to have their international premieres are Serbia’s Awake (10x50 minutes – produced by United Media for Nova S), Finland’s Mister 8 (8x30 minutes – staged by It’s Alive Films for Elisa Viihde) and Germany’s The Allegation (7x30 minutes – produced by Moovie for TV Now and Vox). The long-form competition is rounded off by the Russian series Dreams of Alice, Argentina’s Limbo… Hasta que lo decida, and Israel’s Unknowns and Sad City Girls.

Also worth mentioning, out of competition, are the world premieres of the French series Validé – Season 2 (a 9x30-minute show that will open the festival – produced by Mandarin Television and Autodidakte Production for Canal+), Italy’s Gomorra - Saison finale (which will bring the gathering to a close – 10x50 minutes, produced by Sky Studios and Cattleya, in conjunction with Beta Film, for Sky Italia), Germany’s Sisi (6x45 minutes – produced by Story House Pictures for RTL in conjunction with Beta Film – see the news) and the French-UK effort Around the World in 80 Days (8x52 minutes – staged by Slim Film + Television and Federation Entertainment for France Télévisions, ZDF, RAI, Masterpiece and PBS).

Besides the other competition (involving ten short-form series, five of which will be world-premiered and five internationally premiered), the programme will offer a plethora of meetings and other events (screenings and/or discussions) for the French-speaking audience, and season 4 of Canneseries will hand out three prizes: the Icon Award to US actress Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), the Rising Star Award to her British counterpart Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) and the Commitment Award to screenwriter Laurie Nunn (Sex Education).
