and who will be seen next year in Les Amandiers and Tom), the young Charlie Vauselle, Sophie Guillemin (nominated for a César in 1999 and 2001 for Best Newcomer), Hugues Delamarliere, the opera singer David Serero, Luna Carpiaux, Mathis Piberne and Sacha Cosar-Accaoui.

Written by Robin Campillo and Gilles Marchand (nominated for the 2020 César for Best Adaptation for Only the Animals and twice in 2001 for the César for Best Screenplay for Human Resources and Harry, He’s Here to Help), the screenplay is set in Madagascar at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. On a French army airbase, the soldiers are living the last carefree years of colonialism. Influenced by his readings of Fantômette, Thomas, a child who is not yet 10 years old, gradually forms his own view of the world around him…

Produced by Marie-Ange Luciani for Les Films de Pierre, Red Island is co-produced by France 3 Cinéma, Memento Films Production and the Belgian company Scope Pictures. Pre-bought by France 3, Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature film is also supported by the advance on receipts from the CNC, the South and Pays de la Loire regions, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Procirep, Creative Europe, and the Sofica Indéfilms, Cinémage, Cineventure, La Banque Postale Image, Cinecap and Cofinova. Filming will take place in Paris, Salon de Provence, Madagascar and the Pays de la Loire region, with Jeanne Lapoirie (nominated for a César in her field in 2003, 2014 and 2018) as director of photography. The filmmaker also reunites with Emmanuelle Duplay for set design, Isabelle Pannetier for costumes and Arnaud Rebotini who will compose the music. The French release will be handled by Memento Distribution and international sales will be handled by Playtime.
