The Pop Up Film Residency is enriching its portfolio of programmes as an exclusive and creative partner of Munich Film Up!, a new initiative by the University of Film and Television (HFF München) in partnership with the Filmschoolfest Munich and the Filmfest München. Designed as a mentoring and residential Lab, taking place over an 8-month period (from November 2021 to June 2022), Munich Film Up! intends to support 6 promising young filmmakers – film students & fresh graduates – from all over the world, during the crucial transitory period between film studies and professionalisation.

The programme, which will kick off at the 40th anniversary of the Filmschoolfest Munich in November 2021 and will conclude at the Filmfest München in June 2022, will be focusing as much on the personal development of the mentees as on the development of their film projects (predominantly feature films, yet the program is open to different formats).

For the duration of the Lab, each filmmaker will be coached by Matthieu Darras, along with international industry mentors, to continuously question the creative decisions made during the screenwriting and development process, and to repeatedly apply new approaches. Munich Film Up! will also assist the participating filmmakers to meet renowned international film industry professionals, who will help them advance their projects most effectively.

The deadline of the call is on 15 September, and you can apply here. The six participants will take part in a first get together in November 2021 as part of the Filmschoolfest Munich, during which they will share information about their projects, and define their personal trajectories together with the artistic director during the programme. Each participant will be benefiting from a 3-week-long Pop Up Film Residency, each one situated in a different residence from the network according to the needs of the projects.

They will be matched with their hosts, that are film industry professionals, for instance: producers Katja Adomeit (Denmark), Ada Solomon (Romania), Marija Razgute (Lithuania), Konstantinos Kontovrakis and Giorgos Karnavas (Greece), Myriam Sassine (Lebanon), or Sebastian Pena Escobar (Paraguay), and mentors will come on site and these residencies are planned for winter/spring 2022. Eventually, the participants will meet again in Munich, in the frame of the Filmfest München in June 2022, and networking activities with the film industry will enable their projects to be highlighted in order to move on to production.

Co-director Elena Diesbach, head of International at HFF München, mentioned: “Munich Film Up! is an important step – with the financial help of the Kirch Stiftung and the creative power of Matthieu Darras’ network we will help rising the star of six emerging young talents with their first international projects. Munich Film Up! will act as a cultural incubator – bringing HFF Munich even closer together with the Filmschoolfest and the Filmfest München. For our school, the most important goal remains to foster the kind of inspiring collaboration that will particularly benefit young national and international filmmakers. This will boost the international renown of HFF Munich, while connecting young, up-and-coming talent with HFF Munich, the two Munich festivals, the Munich media centre and the international film and media business in general, along with their creative and professional environment.”
