The Antalya Film Forum has wrapped its seventh edition by handing out awards to the participating projects across its five different platforms, with the financial support it provided totalling over 470,000 TL (€50,650). Running for three days, from 5-7 October, entirely online, the industry event of the 57th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival is headed up by Olena Yershova Yıldız (read the interview), and as every year, it was focused on bringing the Turkish and the international market closer together.

A total of 29 projects participated in this year’s edition of the Antalya Film Forum (see the news). Starting with the Feature Film Pitching session, the winners were picked by Bobby Allen (MUBI), Dilara Omur (BKM) and Delly Shirazi (IFFR). The jury split the prize, totalling 60,000 TL (€6,500), between two projects, which received 30,000 TL in cash apiece, while a third one picked up the Film Standartları Post Production Award.

Bonds, the debut feature-length project by Soner Sert, is a “distinctive family drama with a very strong artistic and cinematographic ambition”, as the jury stated. In it, Mevhibe, a woman in her early 60s, has a heart attack while at the wedding of her youngest son, Osman. She is rushed to hospital for immediate surgery. Her large family is devastated, and when they all donate blood, Osman’s blood turns out to be incompatible, implying that he might be a stepchild. The project is being produced by Seçkin Akyıldız, who previously collaborated with Sert on his short films.

Not As You Know It, the sophomore project by director-producer Vuslat Saraçoğlu (Debt), is a “project with a unique and novel approach to the nature and centrality of disparate memories within the family”, and follows three siblings with different lifestyles and outlooks on life who have to meet in their home town after their father’s mysterious death. During this time together, the tangled structure of siblinghood is exposed in all its various aspects, and the balance of power between the siblings takes very different forms.

The Witch, Erman Bostan’s debut feature, was labelled as a “creative and intriguing mix of genres with a political and social subtext, set in a historical period (the end of the Ottoman Empire) rarely explored in Turkish cinema”, and revolves around a young widow, Fikriye, who is forced into a marriage with Naşit Nefi Effendi, whose mansion is the subject of rumours about an evil witch. It is being produced by Nilüfer Küyel.

In the Feature Works in Progress category, the jury, comprising filmmaker Aslı Özge, film critic and programmer Antoine Thirion, and sales and acquisitions manager at Elle Driver Renan Artukmac, gave the main 80,000 TL (€8,600) award to Time of Impatience [+leggi anche:

, directed and produced by Aydın Orak (Moses Without Rod), for “telling the tragic story of two brothers in a deprived neighbourhood on the outskirts of Diyarbakir, in a courageous and humoristic way”. The project also picked up the Başka Sinema Distribution and Promotion Award, as it is a “tragicomedy with an intriguing, simple plot touching on deeper social issues with a wonderful cast of two young boys”.

The 40,000 TL (€4,300) Special Jury Award was bestowed upon Nazlı Elif Durlu’s debut feature, Zuhal [+leggi anche:

, which “fleshes out the complex character of women in both a realistic and a fantasised set-up”. The movie wrapped shooting earlier this year (see the news) and is being produced by Anna Maria Aslanoğlu. In the same category, the 50,000 TL (€5,400) TRT Award went to Corridor, directed by Erkan Tahhuşoğlu (Verge [+leggi anche:

). It tells the story of two elderly sisters with totally opposite personalities who are forced to live together and are unable to connect either with each other or with the outside world, and the film also “carefully enables the audience to understand how these two sisters have the motivation to damage the thin line between good and evil”. It is being produced by Zeynep Koray, İris Tahhuşoğlu and Yunus Yunusoğlu.

In the Documentary Works in Progress category, the two winners, which will receive 30,000 TL (€3,250) each, were decided on by Philippa Kowalski (Cinephil), Adriek van Nieuwenhuyzen (IDFA) and film critic Necati Sonmez. They are Les Enfants terribles [+leggi anche:

by Ahmet Necdet Çupur and Witch Trilogy 15+ by Ceylan Özgün Özçelik. Also, Somnur Vardar’s Drifting received the Postbıyık Sound Post Production Award, and the Başka Sinema Distribution Award went to Duet by İdil Akkuş and Ekin İlkbağ.

In the newly introduced Series / Short Series Pitching Platform, Laurence Herszberg (Séries Mania), Sarp Kalfaoğlu (BluTV) and Veronika Kovacova (Beta Film) picked Berlinist, created by Serdar Kökçeoğlu and Levent Çetin, as the recipient of the 30,000 TL (€3,250) BluTV Award. The project “presents the atmosphere of the contemporary music culture of Kadikoy, a special district of Istanbul, through a strong female character emanating positive energy”. The Special Award, which includes international consulting from Beta Film, went to Men of Istanbul, created by Ali Kemal Güven, and the Color Up Color Correction Award was bestowed upon A Slow-cooked Heart by Can Evrenol.

Finally, the Sümer Tilmaç Antalya Film Support Fund, which is dedicated to the memory of veteran actor Sümer Tilmaç, and aims to support projects produced and shot in the region of Antalya, rewarded Apollon by Day, Athena by Night by Emine Yıldırım with 150,000 TL (€16,100) and the Fono Film Post Production Award.
