Last week, the Galway Film Fleadh (7-12 July) announced the programme for its 2020 edition through a 20-minute live broadcast on its official YouTube channel. For the first time, the historic Irish gathering will take place entirely online, in response to the coronavirus crisis and the unpredictable times we live in.

The Fleadh will kick off on 7 July with a digital screening of Aideen Kane, Lucy Kennedy and Maeve Boyle’s much-anticipated documentary The 8th [+leggi anche:

, which focuses on the 2018 referendum on abortion and follows some key pro-choice campaigners and how they enabled the emergence of a more liberal society in Ireland.

(UK), Thomas Robert Lee’s atmospheric horror The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw (Canada) and Matt Riddlehoover’s biographical documentary My Darling Vivian (USA), along with three Japanese productions – namely, Makoto Shinkai’s anime Weathering With You, Chie Mikami and Hanayo Oya’s historical documentary Boy Soldiers: The Secret War in Okinawa, and Michio Koshikawa’s island-set drama After the Sunset.

, Trevor Birney’s The Dakota Entrapment Tapes, Gillian Marsh’s Tomorrow Is Saturday, Grace Sweeney’s The Sheriff and Loïc Jourdain’s The Tribe of Gods.

Finally, a new competitive strand called “Peripheral Visions” will be presented in co-operation with Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture. The section was co-curated by the programmers of 12 different festivals representing the new Europa Film Festivals network (see the news).

In total, the upcoming edition of the Fleadh will showcase ten world premieres and 73 new Irish and international shorts. The members of the jury are actors Michael Smiley, Fionnula Flanagan, Keith Carradine, Ruth Negga and Liam Cunningham, alongside TG4 commissioning editor Laura Ní Cheallaigh, director Allison Anders and screenwriter Kirsten Smith.

The titles will be available to rent on www.galwayfilmfleadh.com and viewable across multiple devices for up to 30 hours.
