Written by the director and Gilles Marchand, the story of this new opus takes us to Madagascar during the late 60s-early 1970s, where soldiers are living out the final carefree years of colonialism on a French army air base. Influenced by his readings of Fantômette, Thomas, who’s not yet 10 years old, slowly builds up an idea of the world around him… Produced by Mariage-Ange Luciani for Les Films de Pierre, Red Island might begin filming in July.

An advance on receipts has also been awarded to Mother and Son [+leggi anche:

walked away with the Caméra d’Or at Cannes 2017 following its presentation in the Un Certain Regard line-up. Written by the director herself, the story begins in the early 1980s. A woman from the Ivory Coast moves to the inner Parisian suburbs with her two sons, marking the beginning of an intimate and initiatory journey exploring the construction and deconstruction of a family over the course of 30 years, in a country which has been longed for and much fantasised over, but where life can also turn on a dime. Three paths. Three different experiences of France… Production is entrusted to Sandra da Fonseca on behalf of Blue Monday Productions, with filming expected to begin in September.

The CNC are also throwing their weight behind the project intitled 1986 by Sylvie Verheyde (who wrote the script alongside William Wayolle), which was discovered in November at the French-German Film Meetings (read our news) and is steered by Atelier de Production. This will be the 7th feature film to come from the filmmaker, notably following on from A Brother (Directors’ Fortnight 1997), Stella [+leggi anche:

(unveiled in Cannes’ Critics’ Week 2009 and nominated for the Best First Film Louis-Delluc Prize). Written by the director alongside Nadine Lamari and Marcia Romano, based upon Robert Linhart’s novel of the same name, the story centres around a young, Maoist student at the French École Normale Supérieure who starts a job working on the Citroën production line, a short while after May 68. He hopes to revive the revolutionary flame but the workers, it turns out, are no longer politically minded. When Citroën decides to recoup the costs incurred by the Grenelle Agreements, he and several others spot an opportunity for a potential social movement. Filming is set to kick off in June, with the project steered by Antoine Rein for Karé Productions.

And finally, an advance has also been accorded to the documentary project La Campagne de France [+leggi anche:
