Launched in 2018 in the name of fantasy, science-fiction and horror movies, the CNC’s dedicated support system for genre films this year honed its gaze on musical films, and the jury, presided over by Christophe Honoré, has subsequently selected three projects which will each receive assistance to the tune of up to 500,000 euros.

Among the lucky few, we find La Grande Magie, which will be Noémie Lvovsky’s 7th full-length work, on the heels of Oublie-moi (Berlinale Forum, 1995), Life Doesn’t Scare Me (in competition in Locarno in 1999), Feelings (a Venice competitor in 2003), Let’s Dance [+leggi anche:

Written by Noémie Lvovsky, Florence Seyvos and Maud Ameline, and based upon Eduardo De Filippo’s play La Grande Magia, the story unfurls in a 1920s seaside resort brimming with bored holidaymakers. Albert Marvuglia, a somewhat pitiful magician, makes Marta disappear, and the latter - the wife of wealthy bourgeois Charles Mouffle - makes the most of the magic trick to get away for good… The film’s music will be composed by the rock band Feu! Chatterton (with Florence Seyvos, Arthur Teboul and Noémie Lvovsky penning the lyrics), whilst choreography will be devised by Caroline Marcadet.  Production is in the hands of Pierre-Louis Garnon on behalf of Baxter Films and Frédéric Jouve on behalf of Les Films Velvet.

The CNC will also be throwing its weight behind Don Juan [+leggi anche:

(the winner of Locarno’s 2017 Best Actress Leopard). Adapted from the eponymous classic, the director penned the script for his latest opus in league with his usual writing partner Axelle Ropert. The story focuses on Laurent, who is jilted on his wedding day and who subsequently embarks on an unbridled quest for pleasure. How does he seduce his partners? By singing. Benjamin Esdraffo, Mehdi Zannad and Laurent Talon are tasked with the music, while choreography will be entrusted to Yoann Bourgeois. David Thion, meanwhile, will be helming production on behalf of Les Films Pelléas.

(crowned Best Screenplay in San Sebastian 2015). Written by the two brothers themselves, the story centres around Tralala, a 48-year-old singer-songwriter who becomes a beggar. One evening, he thinks he sees the Holy Virgin. Before disappearing, she delivers a warning: “Whatever you do, don’t be yourself ". Production is in the hands of Saïd Ben Saïd and Kevin Chneiweiss on behalf of SBS Productions.
