The movie is an adaptation of A Trança de Inês, written by late author Rosa Lobato de Faria, and inspired by the historical events relating to Portuguese king Dom Pedro, who exhumed his mistress, Inês de Castro, in order to make her into a queen posthumously. In particular, the script, penned by Ferreira himself, tells the story of Dom Pedro (Diogo Amaral), a man admitted to a psychiatric hospital for travelling by car with the corpse of his beloved, and is set in three different periods – namely, the 14th century, the modern day and a dystopian future. ), among others. The drama was produced by the Portuguese and Brazilian divisions of Persona Non Grata Pictures and Coimbra-based Diálogos Atómicos, in association with MPM Film (France), domestic outfit Riot Films and Refinaria Filmes (Brazil).

Nevertheless, the animated Pixar film Incredibles 2 remains at the top of the overall box-office chart, with over 605,000 admissions and a profit of €3,188,042 (15,596 screenings).

The Dead Queen has been released across 40 screens and is being distributed by Nós Audiovisuais in Portugal and Pandora Filmes in Brazil.
