by István Szabó on 6 December. The 80-year-old Hungarian veteran is reunited with his favourite actor, Austria's Klaus Maria Brandauer (winner of a Golden Globe in 1986 for Best Supporting Actor for Out of Africa, which also earned him an Oscar nomination in the same category), with whom he worked on the famous trilogy including Mephisto (winner of an Oscar in 1981 for Best Foreign Language Film and winner of the Screenplay Award at Cannes), Colonel Redl (Jury Prize at Cannes and nominated for the 1986 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film) and Hanussen (in competition at Cannes in 1988 and nominated for the 1989 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film). For the record, the director has also won three awards at Locarno (Best First Film in 1965, Special Jury Prize in 1967 and the Golden Leopard in 1974) and two awards at Berlin (Silver Bear in 1979 and Special Jury Prize in 1992). Final Report' cast also includes Karoly Eperjes (nominated for the European Film Award for Best Actor for Eldorádó in 1989), Éva Kerekes (an excellent performance in Franciska vasárnapjai, and most notably seen in Szezon and The Investigator), András Stohl, Dorottya Udvaros, Mari Csomós, Ági Szirtes, Enikő Börcsök, Eszter Csákányi and József Szarvas.

Written by István Szabó, the screenplay focuses on a respected cardiologist, who is unexpectedly asked to retire. Finding it difficult to adjust to no longer working at the hospital, he decides to return to his place of birth, to visit his mother on her 90th birthday. There, he learns that the town hasn’t had a doctor for over a year. His mother convinces him to take up a job as a local GP. The mayor is happy to welcome him to the town, which proves to be the start of a somewhat calamitous journey. After a sheltered life as a clinician in the capital city, he now comes face to face with stark reality and its death toll. This brings him into conflict with paramedics, doctors at the county hospital and ultimately, the mayor. Beyond their professional disagreements, there is another source of conflict between the doctor and the mayor. A woman.

Produced by Pál Sándor and Attila Tozsér for Film Street, Final Report has received funding from the Hungarian National Film Fund (which will also handle international sales through HNFF World Sales). The shoot, which began on 22 September, is taking place in Budapest, Zebegény and Nagybörzsöny. Distribution in Hungarian cinemas will be provided by Intercom.
