 by Joachim A Lang, starring Lars Eidinger as famous playwright Bertolt Brecht as he attempts to adapt The Threepenny Opera for the silver screen at the end of the 1920s while standing firm against commercial demands, will today have the honour of opening the 23rd German Film Festival. Unspooling until 9 October in Paris, at the Arlequin cinema, the German Films-organised event will include a "Cinema of Today" programme, which presents a selection of ten features representative of the crème de la crème of recent German film production, to be shown in the presence of their directors.

The German Film Festival has this year chosen to give pride of place to young actress Liv Lisa Fries through two films and, in particular, the series Babylon Berlin. Lastly, the gathering’s agenda also includes a selection of the best of this year’s short films made in German film schools (Next Generation) and some of the winners of the Short Tiger Award, bestowed upon the best short films under five minutes long.
