has been chosen to represent the Netherlands at the 2019 Oscars. The film, penned by actress and writer Marieke van der Pol (who has recently written titles such as Isabelle [+leggi anche:

) and Thomas van der Ree (The Flying Dog, Riphagen), is based on the real story of banker Walraven van Hall (Barry Atsma), who financed the Dutch resistance during the Second World War. During the Nazi occupation, Walraven and his brother Gijs (Jacob Derwig) developed several strategies to finance the resistance, including ‘robbing’ the central bank, with the approval of the exiled Dutch government.

Joram Lürsen has been working for Dutch television and film since 1990 and is probably best known nationwide for his 2007 romantic comedy Love is All [+leggi anche:

, which received a Diamond Film for raking in 1,000,000 viewers in the Netherlands alone. The Resistance Banker was the most viewed Dutch film of 2018 and was nominated for eleven Golden Calves.

Produced byDutch FilmWork, NL Film, Nanook Entertainment and Belgium’s Mollywood in co-operation with Evangelische Omroep and Belgium’s Zilvermeer Productions, The Resistance Banker will be soon included in Netflix’s global line-up. The Los Gatos giant is in charge of world distribution, together with the production outfit Dutch FilmWorks. The project has also benefitted from generous tax incentives, offered by the Federal Government of Belgium and the Netherlands Film Fund.

As of today, seven Dutch films have been nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film, three of which have won the award: Fons Rademakers's The Assault in 1987, Marleen GorrisAntonia's Line in 1996 and Mike van Diem’s Character in 1998.
