Art Department Masterclass is an educational programme for art department crew, a space where both aspiring and seasoned art-department professionals can meet and share their experience. We spoke to two of its employees, Domante Urmonaitė and Ieva Bužinskaitė, about what they called their “dream project”.

Cineuropa: What is Art Department Masterclass?
Domante Urmonaitė and Ieva Bužinskaitė:
Art Department Masterclass is an educational programme for art-department crew. We organise two training sessions per year, and invite 20 participants and four experts to each of the sessions. Back in 2014, we decided to “reach for the stars” and create our dream project – a space where the greatest heroes of the art department would be able to share their experience with emerging talents. In 2015, we organised our first training session in Vilnius. The success of this first edition proved that such a project is needed and is appreciated among many passionate production designers. Since then, we have organised ten training sessions in Lithuania, Italy and Iceland. We have invited 24 experts and selected 174 participants from Europe, the USA, China, Canada, India, South America and Africa.

, The Young Pope] and many others. In 2022, we’re going to organise two training sessions in Vilnius and Turin. Our project is co-funded by the European Union’s MEDIA programme.

Which subjects are mainly taught?
The content of our upcoming training session includes case studies, Q&A sessions and screenings. The “World Building” training session mostly focuses on the art department’s work in development and production. We also want to make an impact by making environmentally friendly work in the art department one of the focuses of the training.

We also think that this session is great for inspiration. It is one of the key elements while working in the art department: staying inspired to do your work and getting artistic satisfaction, no matter how impossible it is sometimes.

Does the course include practical sessions?
Our upcoming training session in Vilnius doesn’t include practical assignments. Our practical assignment will be part of our second session this autumn, in Italy.

Who is the course aimed at?
Art Department Masterclass is designed for art-department crew – production designers, art directors, set decorators, set dressers, prop masters, graphic designers, standby props and anyone else who may be pursuing a career in the art department. Our ideal participants are highly motivated art-department crew members who are eager to learn from the best experts, dare to dream big and are passionate about extending their professional network.
