Bruno Smadja • Fondatore di Cross Video Days

While the Cross Video Days call for projects for crossmedia and transmedia works was in full swing, Cineuropa interviewed its founder, Bruno Smadja, to find out what’s new for the 2014 edition, which takes place in Paris on 19 and 20 June.

Cineuropa: What’s new for this call for crossmedia and transmedia projects?
Bruno Smadja: Following our success last year, when we received over 350 projects from 34 different countries, this year we have organised the call for projects – which closes on 15 April – into six well-defined categories. The “Cinema and Transmedia” category is aimed at feature-film projects intended for release in theatres, which will have envisaged a creative and innovative transmedia plan. In the “Interactive Factuals” category, we accept all digital forms of narrative, including apps, video games, webdocs and platforms developing some kind of documentary content. The “Webseries and Webfiction” call is aimed at webseries that have had either a first season or several episodes self-produced already. The “Crossmedia TV Shows” part is intended for original and interactive TV programme concepts. The “Education, Animation and Youth” category is intended for all those who use new platforms in order to educate and teach. Meanwhile, the final category, “Other Projects”, focuses on uncategorisable, highly creative or experimental projects.

It’s important to remember that registration is free of charge and not limited as to the number of projects. The 50 selected projects will be invited to the Cross Video Days and will be offered various meetings with European and American commissioning editors. In 2013, we organised 500 meetings over two days. Lastly, for those that don't end up being selected, their application is entitled to a 60% reduction on the total accreditation fee for taking part in the fifth edition of Cross Video Days on 19 and 20 June in Paris.

You have also introduced many new partners this year
Yes, this year, the call for projects is being carried out with some exceptional partners. First of all, we are working with the Cannes Marché du Film, which is joining forces with the Cinema and Transmedia category. The projects selected will have a great opportunity to pitch twice in public: once at Cannes on 17 May in a room at the Palais, as part of the new Next Pavilion opened by the Marché; and again in Paris on 19 June at the Cross Video Days. We also have a partnership set up with Sunny Side of the Doc, which is collaborating in the Interactive Factuals category. By applying, producers give themselves the opportunity to be accepted at two markets: Sunny Side of the Doc and the Cross Video Days. Lastly, the company KNIGHTWORKS, a design and post-production studio that specialises in animation and VFX, will award a €10,000 grant in contribution of services to the best project at the Content Market.

Who are the most prestigious guests to have already confirmed their attendance?
First of all, we are very fortunate to welcome one of the godfathers of the Cross Video Days, Alexandre Brachet, the founder of Upian, for the first time, which is a real honour. He will be joined by some big names from the transmedia world, such as Michel Reilhac, Eric Viennot, the team from France Télévision Nouvelles Ecritures, Marianne Levy-Leblond from Arte, Amanda Farnsworth from the BBC, Adnaan Wasey from POV Digital, Damien Marchi from Euronews, Markus Nikel from RAI Educational, Adam Gee from Channel 4, the team from the Tribeca Film Institute and many others besides. This will be a very fine edition, and we can clearly feel the market taking shape around the new models, and all of the longstanding stakeholders and the new entrants are putting a lot into it.
