The Kimolos International Film Festival has rounded off its fourth edition (13-20 June) with an awards ceremony. For eight days, the festival managed to bring special cinematic experiences to the Cycladic Island. As at previous editions, the gathering aimed to promote and support independent cinema by introducing more popular and lesser-known films to the local and international audience who attended all of its screenings.

The Golden Tree, the main prize of the festival, was bestowed upon the drama Foscadh [+lire aussi :

, written and directed by first-time Irish filmmaker Seán Breathnach. The film, which also won the Award for Best Irish First Feature at the Galway Film Fleadh (see the news) and was Ireland’s Oscars submission, is based on Donal Ryan’s 2013 social novel The Thing About December. The story follows friendless recluse John Cunliffe (Dónall Ó Héalai), who, after his over-protective parents pass away, discovers their land to be extremely valuable, and he is forced to navigate the choppy waters of trust, vengeance and romance for the first time.

The five-member international jury – headed up by French-Algerian festival programmer and manager of Cairo Film Connection Lynda Belkhiria, flanked by António Costa Valente, director of the AVANCA Film Festival in Portugal, Greek film producer Katia Pantazi, actress and director Korina Kontaksaki, and local director of photography Aristotelis Metaxas – also deemed Venezuelan filmmaker Nico Manzano worthy of the Best Director Award, for his debut feature, the dramedy Me & the Beasts, which follows an alternative rock band’s singer-guitarist who starts a solo career, seeking inspiration as Venezuela’s crisis roils, with the help of “The Beasts”, two mysterious masked beings.

Finally, for the first time, the jury decided to give out a Special Mention, and this went to the Quebecois drama Bootlegger, written and directed by Caroline Monnet, for its original score, which was composed by Jean Martin and Tanya Tagaq.

The closing ceremony took place on the beach of Prassa, and it was hosted by the festival presenter, Nia Foes. The artistic director of the event, Manuel de Coco, also announced that the fifth Kimolos International Film Festival would take place in June 2023.
