MIDPOINT Shorts évolue et accueille un nouveau lot de projets

Cet article est disponible en anglais.

Organised by the MIDPOINT Institute, MIDPOINT Shorts is the only complex programme dedicated to the script and project development of short films in Europe connected to the beating heart of the film industry. The combination of in-depth script analysis and professional project development helps guide projects on their path to the cinema. Thanks to a multi-stage project selection process, the programme now allows more emerging talents to be supported.

The creative teams – writers, directors and producers – which can be from all over the world, with a regional focus on Central and Eastern Europe, can apply for MIDPOINT Shorts, and the programme consists of group work and individual consultations focused on in-depth screenplay development and structural script consultancy. The main change to the call this year is that each project can be taken to the next level and the team behind it can enter the industry world even from a one-pager that will lead to a treatment, and then from a treatment to a script. Thanks to the guidance of the experts, the first draft can pave the way for the final one, and the training provided is being broadened to offer production-strategy guidance, incorporate distribution strategies into the development process, and offer insights into financing, sales and festival strategies.

Headed up by short-film expert and director Pavel Marek, the MIDPOINT Shorts programme will start with an online feedback session in early September, where 20 shortlisted projects will receive an online assessment from a script consultant and production tutor. At the second stage, the Online Ideas Incubator, ten projects will benefit from further script and project development. After this workshop, the final four or five projects will be selected for the main Shorts programme, which consists of two residential workshops and the project showcase during When East Meets West.

The next step will be an intensive residential workshop in Prague in mid-November, focused on script development and project packaging, with online consultations following this up. The second residential workshop will be held next January in Trieste, in collaboration with When East Meets West and the Trieste Film Festival. During the last workshop, where the participants will acquire skills and knowledge regarding promotion, presentation and pitching, the projects will be showcased within the WEMW Co-Production Forum, and this will be followed by curated meetings with industry professionals.

Another series of online consultations will take place subsequently, and it should be underlined that for the second year running, after entering the shooting phase, selected MIDPOINT Shorts project graduates will get the chance to attend the Cannes Court Métrage Focus WiP.

The deadline for applications has been set as 22 July, and for the first time, MIDPOINT Shorts will pick participants in a multi-stage project selection process. For the first stage, some of the basic information needed will be a one-page synopsis, a short author’s and producer’s statement, and further information about their previous works. All of the detailed information and the application form can be found here.
