(see the production news), would be competing in the main competition of the San Sebastián Film Festival, Romanian director Alina Grigore has wrapped the shoot for her sophomore feature, Amid Waters (working title). This independent, exclusively Romanian production is being staged by Atelier de Film, Forest Film Production, InLight Center and Avanpost.

The screenplay, written by Grigore, centres on the difficult relationship between a father, Rudi, and his daughter, Lola, a young actress with a bohemian lifestyle, whose wildly different personalities often put them in conflict with one another. As Rudi thinks Lola’s life choices are increasingly dubious, he unexpectedly shows up at the family’s summer house in the Danube Delta, determined to find solutions to brighten his daughter’s future.

The film’s budget amounts to circa €240,000. The shoot took only ten days, one in June in the vicinity of Bucharest, and another nine in August, in a village in the Danube Delta. The film’s team says they needed so few days for the shoot because all of the actors rehearsed for more than a year before entering production. Adrian Pădureţu is the DoP. Ciprian Teodorescu and Elena Filip play the protagonists, while Sabina Plăcintescu, Robi Urs, Irina Teodor, Vlad-Adrian Iancu and Anca Simon play supporting characters.

Producer Gabriela Suciu tells Cineuropa that she preferred to make the film independently, as applying for funding by participating in a project contest organised by the Romanian National Film Center “would have lengthened the production process”. About her production strategy, Suciu says she would rather approach companies “with shared values – companies that have marketing campaigns I find attractive. I believe in smart product placement and creative methods of placing brands in a film.”

Alina Grigore says that the main purpose of her film is to explore “with honesty and courage whether there is something immoral in love and sex”. She also says, “Lola is the central energy around which three masculine forces gravitate: her father’s, her brother’s and her lover’s. These forces shape various types of love – for example, love seen as duty, a unilateral responsibility, because for Rudi, being a father means only being a provider of protection and financial stability, which actually helps him hide the fact that he is incapable of empathy.”

Amid Waters will wrap post-production in the first few months of 2022 and will be released domestically in the summer, hopefully after a world premiere at an international film festival.
