A few days ago, we reported on the filming of ¡García! (see the news), and now, with this article, we cover Everything Else, another HBO Max Original series, which wrapped its shoot in the Spanish capital last month and now finds itself immersed in post-production. Catalonian director Abril Zamora has written, is directing and stars in this series revolving around a group of thirtysomethings, all stuck in lives that are a far cry from the ones they had dreamed of.

. Furthermore, she is the co-creator of Dangerous Moms, for which she wrote the scripts for the first season and even directed some of these episodes. She also penned various episodes of Elite.

Now she has crafted this extremely personal story, in which the actress breathes life into Dafne, the protagonist of Everything Else, who has a crappy job, has just been dumped by her boyfriend and realises that she is in love with her best friend, played by Juan Blanco (who appeared in Zerø [+lire aussi :

). David Matarín, Nuria Herrero, Andrea Guasch, María Maroto, Bea de la Cruz, Marta Belenguer, Pepe Lorente and Raúl Mérida round off the main cast, which also includes Miguel Bernardeau and Alberto Casado.

“It’s a series with naturalistic undertones, with lighter and more comical parts, and other bits that are more dramatic and with a focus on local traditions. We didn’t want to restrict ourselves: its genre has gradually been taking shape as the story has developed,” Zamora reveals. “It talks about a group of friends who just drift through their thirties, having relationship troubles or conflicts in the workplace, but also dealing with those other minor problems that can sometimes become the straw that breaks the camel’s back. We are always immersed in small crises, both day-to-day ones and more serious ones.”

Given that Monday 28 June was Pride Day, we wondered whether there would be an LGTBI message contained in Everything Else. “No; the fact that I am the main character is already a pretty big statement in itself – that makes it totally radical, but there’s nothing beyond that. Transsexuality is hardly mentioned, just as I don’t mention it in my own life. It’s novel in that respect, but it is not focused on that group. We have to take bigger risks: it’s more inclusive to show normality in all its aspects, with other stories, and that’s why the fact that I’m trans was never relevant for me within the storyline. The time has come for us to be able to lighten the load so as to normalise it, and for others to see that we are normal people, just like everyone else,” sums up Zamora, who does not rule out making the leap to directing films.

Everything Else, an eight-episode series, with each instalment lasting 30 minutes, is being produced by Mandarina for WarnerMedia, and it will be aired in autumn 2021 on HBO Max.
