On Saturday, the winners of the 2021 Punto de Vista – Navarre International Documentary Film Festival were unveiled, after the gathering unspooled in Pamplona from 15-20 March. The jury – comprising Nicole Brenez, James Lattimer and Antoine Thirion – called it “a spectacular but at the same time unassuming film. Visiting means seeing, and seeing on a regular basis. At the core of this feature is a distraught woman who is visited by many memories. There is a house, visited by many friends, neighbours and family members. There is a field, which this woman tends, come what may. And there is a landscape from which this film gathers images and sounds over the course of many different seasons. Working this soil untiringly, both this woman and the feature itself create a world, and this world eventually blossoms in the audience’s mind. In these times that are driving people apart, this work continues to fight to maintain a connection between people and the world we live in.”

Meanwhile, the Jean Vigo Award for Best Director (worth €5,000) was conferred upon the short film Surviving You, Always (UK) by Morgan Quaintance. The jury pointed out, “It brings together disparate elements into a mysterious and singular whole, which is fuelled by photos, celluloid, music and two texts that run in parallel with each other and are never afraid to drag you off in different directions at the same time, like a drug-induced trip that dissociates the mind from the body, like a snake writhing between the walls. It’s a love story that is also a tale of fear, paranoia and longing, simultaneously functioning as an alternative history of the United Kingdom; here, politics is not mentioned explicitly, but everything is there, in the reels.”

The Award for Best Short Film (to the tune of €3,000) went to Amaryllis – A Study (UK) by Jayne Parker. Furthermore, other trophies handed out at the gathering included the Special Audience Award (€1,650) for the short In Ictu Oculi (begiak hesteko artean) by Spaniard Jorge Moneo Quintana, the Youth Award (€1,500) for the short This Day Won’t Last (Tunisia/Belgium) by Mouaad el Salem, and Special Mentions of the Jury for the medium-length film Bicentenario (Canada/Colombia) by Pablo Álvarez Mesa (in the Best Film category) and Signal 8 (Hong Kong/USA) by Simon Liu (in the Best Short Film category).

Finally, the 2021 Proyecto X Films jury (made up of Marta Ponsa and Ane Rodríguez Armendáriz), which weighed up the works by the three female hopefuls – Tamara García, Irati Gorostidi and Elisa Celda – decided to bestow its prize upon San Simón 62 by Gorostidi, “for revealing an unknown inner history from the region that broadens the collective imagination of a certain period, but from the perspective of the present. It makes use of a story that takes a specific environment and positions it as a witness to the way of life of spiritual communities. The auteur conjures up the past through archive images and testimonies, while at the same time searching in the present day for the hidden traces that were left behind by these communities. It also reflects the approaches of alternative lifestyles that emerge in times of crisis, such as the one we are currently living through.”
