Fortnite has wrapped the first film festival hosted by a video game, Short Nite. The free-to-access, 24-hour event included 12 animated shorts, such as Rich Webber's Bench, Kouhei Nakama's Makin' Moves, Simone Giampaolo and Francesco Mazza's Lynx & Birds, Ant Blades' Carpark, Nick Park's Creature Comforts and the Gobelins l'Ecole de l'Image project Oktopodi. Short Nite represented an unprecedented marketing opportunity, as the shorts were broadcast within a video game that, according to the figures provided by publisher Epic Games, has over 350 million registered players. The event kicked off on Saturday 20 February at 2 pm ET.

Fortnite was released in July 2017 and is currently available in three distinct versions sharing the same game engine (Fortnite: Save the World, Fortnite Battle Royale and Fortnite Creative). Meanwhile, Epic Games' MegaGrants programme is funding an animated feature, entitled Gilgamesh and set to be created using the Unreal Engine. In particular, the movie will focus on a demigod’s quest for immortality and his rivalry – and then friendship – with wild man Enkidu.

It will be interesting to see if Short Nite will remain a one-off experiment or whether it will be followed by similar initiatives, organised by either Epic Games or its competitors. Watch this space.
