UPDATE (6 April 2021): Due to an increased number of applications, the MFI Script 2 Film Workshops has announced an extension of this year’s call, with the deadline now being set as 10 April, for European and international creative teams with a project in development. All relevant information can be found here. Furthermore, due to the current pandemic situation in Greece and the extension of the school year, the first workshop on Nisyros island will have new dates and will run from 2-14 July. As the MFI underlines, the target this year is to hold a physical edition of the workshop, and the participants should be able to attend in person, in accordance with health-and-safety protocols (having had either a vaccine or a negative COVID-19 test).

Organised by the Mediterranean Film Institute (MFI), the MFI Script 2 Film Workshops advanced script and project development training programme has launched the call for its 2021 session. Placing its focus squarely on story design development and implementation across various narrative formats (feature films, documentaries and TV series), the programme consists of four intensive workshop sessions, both residential and online, based primarily on group work, master classes, lectures, plenary sessions, case studies and individual consultations throughout a six-month cycle.

As in the previous editions, the MFI Script 2 Film Workshops comprise two programmes this year. First, there is Script Development, where the participating teams fully develop and flesh out their screenplays, starting from the initial or subsequent draft and continuing all the way to the final one, aiming to deliver solid screenplays with a strong dramatic impact for international audiences. Project Development aims to offer them the tools they need to set up an effective project development process, and attract financiers and co-producers, by strategically analysing their work in terms of potential market and audiences.

Furthermore, a number of places are reserved for the training of future script-development professionals (screenwriters, script consultants, trainers, commissioning editors, producers and decision makers) who wish to improve their skills in a practical way throughout the workshops, as they can serve as assistant trainers working alongside the programme’s tutors during the development of the participating scripts.

According to current plans, the first session of the 2021 edition of the MFI Script 2 Film Workshops will take place in late June on the Greek island of Nisyros, and the second will run online in August and September. For the third session, the participants will meet on the island of Rhodes in October, and the programme will wrap with the fourth, online, session in December.

European and international creative teams, composed of screenwriters, producers and directors, with a feature-length fiction film (Film Lab), feature documentary (Doc Lab) or TV series (Series Lab) project in development are eligible to apply, and the deadline is 5 April 2021. For the future script-development professionals, without a project, they are also welcome to apply until 15 May 2021. For more detailed information and for the online application form, candidates should click here.

The MFI Script 2 Film Workshops programme is supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA programme, in partnership with ERT SA. It is funded by the General Secretariat for the Aegean and Island Policy, the Municipalities of Nisyros and Rhodes, and EKOME SA, and is organised in co-operation with the Thessaloniki International Film Festival Agora, Los Angeles Greek Film Festival, Cinemed Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival, Istanbul Film Festival Meetings on the Bridge, Sofia Meetings, Visions du Réel and the MIDPOINT Institute.
