Taking place entirely online from 3-4 February, the Göteborg Film Festival’s TV Drama Vision aims to present visions of the future in the European drama industry, focusing particularly on how the past year has affected production and to what extent it has accelerated global transitions in the industry. The aftermath of the streaming wars, audience behaviour, the stories that are being embraced now and the changes in common European storytelling are just some of the many subjects set to be discussed at one of the most important platforms for the industry.

The honorary guest of TV Drama Vision is award-winning Danish writer-director Susanne Bier, who will deliver a keynote interview. The future of the scripted television industry will be presented by keynote speakers Walter Iuzzolino (CEO, Eagle Eye Drama) and market analyst Guy Bisson (Ampere Analysis), while Johanna Koljonen, media analyst and author of the Göteborg Film Festival’s Nostradamus report, will present its eighth edition. Other highlights include the launch of HBO Max in Europe and a look at the local original content to be included. Nordic broadcasters and streamers (SVT, YLE, NRK, DR, Viaplay, TV2 Danmark and TV4) will present some of their upcoming series and their plans for the future, while a special session on the advantages of virtual production is also being organised. The event is also looking further afield from just the Nordics, with a discussion on the global success of Spanish drama, along with examining future visions for festivals and markets in Europe. As always, the annual Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize will be handed out at the end of TV Drama Vision.

Regarding the selection, two projects that are currently at the work-in-progress stage are being presented. Swedish director Lisa James Larsson is showcasing her four-part drama based on true events A Royal Secret. Set in the 1950s, it follows the story of a forbidden love that got out into the public eye and led to one of the worst miscarriages of justice in Sweden. The other project is the Icelandic eight-part drama Blackport, another story based on true events, set in a small coastal fishing village between 1984 and 1991, during a challenging period for Iceland’s fishing industry, which was riddled with greed and corruption (see the news). The series is co-written and directed by members of the Vesturport collective, Gísli Örn Garðarsson, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, along with Mikael Torfason.

Furthermore, four Nordic series that are in development are being presented at TV Drama Vision. The Finnish drama 506 Grams of Ural Snow, written by Topi Koljonen, follows a police inspector who embarks on a dangerous trip to Russia with a local drug lord in order to investigate his son’s disappearance. ), probes the internal power struggle in the Norwegian Labour Party in the late 1970s and Gro Harlem Brundtland’s path to becoming the country’s first female prime minister. Vigdis is another political drama, directed by Baldvin Z (Let Me Fall [+lire aussi :

), and it also hinges on a similar subject, as it tells the story of the transformation of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, portrayed by Nina Dogg Filipusdottir, who defied patriarchal society and became the world’s first elected female president in 1980. Also inspired by real events, the Swedish dramedy Whiskey on the Rocks focuses on one of the most embarrassing and absurd incidents of the Cold War when, in the early 1980s, a Soviet U-137 ‘Whiskey’-class submarine ran aground on rocks deep inside Swedish territorial waters.

Finally, three European projects in development wrap the selection of the section: the Croatian detective drama The Abyss, directed by Mladen Dizdar; the post-apocalyptic Croatian-Icelandic co-production The Possibility of an Island, written by Mateja Božičević; and the Estonian detective whodunnit series Who Shot Otto Mueller?, directed by Ain Mäeots.
