(2019), which revolves around a Portuguese family who own one of the largest estates in Europe, on the south bank of the River Tagus, and a four-episode series based on the same feature, released this year.

Glória was developed by Pedro Lopes (also responsible for the TV series Conta-me como foi) and is being filmed in the Ribatejo region and in and around the Portuguese capital. The series is set in the 1960s and is a historical spy thriller centred on RARET, the re-broadcasting office of Radio Free Europe. It shows how Glória, a small village in Ribatejo, became an unlikely theatre of the Cold War where American and Soviet forces fought through dangerous sabotage manoeuvres in order to gain control of Europe. We follow João Vidal in great detail, a young man from a family with connections in the Portuguese Fascist Regime who is recruited by the KGB after becoming politicised in the Colonial War. João will find himself involved in the intricate webs of the spy game and will ultimately understand that whatever side he is on, the world, particularly the one of espionage, is never black and white.

Confirmed actors attached to the project are Miguel Nunes, Carolina Amaral, Victoria Guerra, Afonso Pimentel, Adriano Luz, Joana Ribeiro, Marcelo Urgeghe, Sandra Faleiro, Carloto Cotta, Maria João Pinho, Inês Castel-Branco, Rafael Morais and Leonor Silveira.

Speaking about the project, SPI executive director José Amaral said: “This is a journey, and a strategic vision for international expansion that we have been following. As producers, this moment also represents the beginning of a new cycle for the Portuguese audiovisual market, since it places our country on the roadmap of the great international productions that Netflix has been advocating, and which we are privileged to be able to count on with the participation of RTP, which has been a great partner in this international positioning.”

Glória is produced by SPI of Grupo SP Televisão and co-produced with RTP. The project is also receiving support from the national Tourism, Film and Audiovisual Fund.
