The San Sebastián International Film Festival has prepared the first run of the WIP Latam section for its special 2020 edition. After several years of holding the pioneering Films in Progress section, organised in partnership with the Cinélatino Festival in Toulouse, the Basque festival has created its own work in progress section with the same goal of putting the spotlight on new creative works from Latam and building bridges between industry professionals there and in Europe.

WIP Latam will be held from 22 to 24 September (the festival is held from 18 to 26) and will combine onsite and online formats. Those professionals who are able to come in person to San Sebastián in spite of the current public health situation will attend the screenings in cinemas, while the rest will be able to enjoy these services virtually. The six participating projects in the work in progress section will compete for the WIP Latam Industry Award and the Egeda Platino Industry Award for best WIP Latam.

Argentina’s Iván Fund, whose first work, The Lips, codirected with Santiago Loza and part of Un Certain Regard at Cannes 2010, is one of the projects selected; the others are works by Colombia’s Juan Sebastián Mesa, winner of the Audience Award at the Venice Critics’ Week for The Nobodies; Uruguay’s Manuel Nieto, winner of the Tiger Award at the IFFR 2006 with The Dog Pound; and Argentina’s Maximiliano Schonfeld. Two debut films have also bagged a spot: one by Paraguayan Federico Adorno and one by Argentinian Jerónimo Quevedo.
