Shot in Latvia, Sweden and Italy, Wild East tells the story of Eva, a 16-year-old aristocrat who goes missing from the Baron’s manor on the day of her arranged wedding. When the Baron's head servant, Magda, is found murdered in the manor’s stables, an investigation starts where everyone is a suspect. The Baron’s henchmen and local law enforcement set out to find the girl and bring her back to the Baron, but Eva will do everything it takes to secure her freedom. The confirmed members of the main cast are actors Zanete Zvigule, Toms Velicko, Egons Dombrovskis, Agnese Cirule, Vilis Daudzins and Kaspars Znotins. Meanwhile, the crew includes production designer Jurgis Krasons, costume designer Liga Krasone, editor Gatis Belogrudovs and DoP Aleksandrs Grebnevs.

Speaking about his film and the unusual Latvian setting, Kaža disclosed to Cineuropa: “I must admit that Latvia is one of the unlikeliest places in the world to set a western, but we have managed to transform the archetypical characters of the American western and place them right inside the Russian Empire of the late 19th century. As a fan of Italian spaghetti westerns and American revisionist cinema, the western has been my favourite genre since I was a teenager. Astounding compositions, cinematic movement and primal elements make up the core of the genre. While, in essence, my film is a highly visual and cinematic experience, it also tells a story of emancipation in a colonial society, which is an extremely relevant topic for the current times.”

Wild East is being produced by Una Celma and Dace Siatkovska for Latvia’s Fenixfilm, and by the director himself for fellow Latvian outfit Deep Sea Studios. Zahavi Sanjavi will serve as the co-producer for Sweden’s AVB Production. The project also received backing from the National Film Centre of Latvia and IDM South Tyrol. The official release date is yet to be disclosed.
