The Sundance Film Festival (23 January-2 February 2020) has announced its selection in the Indie Episodic, Shorts and Special Events sections.

The European presence is strongest in the International Narrative Short Films selection, with nine out of the total of 19 titles hailing from the Continent, and in Animated Short Films, with eight out of the 15 works.

A total of 74 shorts will screen at the festival, coming from 27 countries and chosen from among 10,397 submissions – 4,992 from the USA and 5,405 international ones.

The International Narrative Short Films include Are You Hungry? by Teemu Niukkanen (Finland), Bad Hair by Oskar Lehemaa (Estonia), The Devil's Harmony by Dylan Holmes Williams (UK), Former Cult Member Hears Music For the First Time by Kristoffer Borgli (Norway/USA), Leave of Absence by Anton Sazonov (Russia), Olla by Ariane Labed (France/UK), Paola Makes a Wish by Zhannat Alshanova (Switzerland), So What If the Goats Die by Sofia Alaoui (France/Morocco) and Sticker by Georgi M Unkovski (North Macedonia).

The Animated Short Films section includes Student Oscar winner Daughter by Daria Kashcheeva (Czech Republic), Farce by Robin Jensen (Norway), Inès by Élodie Dermange (France/Switzerland), My Juke-Box by Florentine Grelier (France), No, I Don't Want to Dance! by Andrea Vinciguerra (UK), Sh_t Happens by Michaela Mihalyi and David Štumpf (Czech Republic/Slovakia/ France), Slug Life by Sophie Koko Gate (UK) and Wood Child and Hidden Forest Mother by Stephen Irwin (UK).

The Documentary Short Film section is dominated by US titles but includes two European efforts: Junior Bangers by Danny Lee (UK) and While I'm Still Breathing by Laure Giappiconi, Elisa Monteil and La Fille Renne (France).

In Indie Episodic, a dedicated showcase for emerging creators of independently produced episodic content for broadcast, web and streaming platforms, there are also two European works: Chemo Brain by Kristian Håskjold (Denmark) and Laetitia by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade (France).

Finally, Max Richter's Sleep by the UK's Natalie Johns is among the Special Events, described as "one-of-a-kind moments highlighting new independent works that add to the unique festival experience".
