With his company Peglanje snova, Croatian producer Bojan Kanjera produced his first feature fiction film Lada Kamenski [+lire aussi :

. He is currently working on new projects from legendary Yugoslav director Eduard Galić, and idiosyncratic Serbian documentary filmmaker Boris Mitić. Kanjera was selected to participate in the EFP’s Producers on the Move for 2021.

Cineuropa: What kind of films do you like making, and why? 
Bojan Kanjera:
I like films that have an edge to them and try to show something new, or just take a bit of a different angle on things surrounding us. It always starts with a compelling story but I believe that the deciding factor in the end should be working with authors who are passionate about their films and are willing to undertake certain risks throughout the process.

Can you tell us a bit about the projects you are currently working on?
We are currently wrapping up post-production on a contemporary war thriller called Sixth Bus, directed by legendary ex-Yugoslav director Eduard Galić. It was a really challenging production that was, on top of everything, affected by the ongoing epidemic. So I am really looking forward to this film being close to distribution.

The project I would definitely highlight is the feature documentary And Now What, and Then What by Boris Mitić. Boris likes to take things out of perspective and as he has shown with his previous films In Praise of Nothing [+lire aussi :

, Goodbye, How Are You? and Pretty Diana that he is always trying to shift the boundaries of filmmaking and storytelling. So I am really happy to be a part of this new adventure.

On top of that, I am currently working on the pre-production of the debut feature from Zvonimir Munivrana. Planted is a modern-day coming-of-age story with a strong female lead, our rising star Tara Thaler.

There are several other projects in early development and one that I would like to mention is a Mediterranean trilogy set in Split and written by one of the most exciting younger writers in Croatia, Ante Marin. I am also trying to shift my focus a bit towards producing and creating online content but it is still a bit too early to talk about that in more detail. 

How do you see the current state of the Croatian film industry? 
Considering that the COVID outbreak has severely shaken up our industry as a whole, and a practical nightmare followed for the producers with multiple (and ongoing) postponements, things have started to settle a bit. Croatia was extremely lucky with COVID restrictions throughout the epidemic, so we had some local productions done in 2020. 

So far, 2021 looks promising, as quite a lot of service productions and co-productions have found their way back to Croatia, so the industry is slowly getting back on its feet. However, domestic production is still almost exclusively reliant on the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, while our national broadcaster HRT has proven through the years to be an unreliable and at times a completely nonexistent partner.

What do you expect from Producers on the Move?
It is quite a privilege to be part of this year's Producers on the Move, especially after such a turbulent year behind us. This will definitely give us all an opportunity to exchange our experiences and assess the inevitable changes and their impact on the state of the audiovisual industry as a whole.
