HAVEL

by Slávek Horák

synopsis

Drama following Václav Havel's transformation from careless bohemian playwright in late 1960's into human rights activist and prisoner of conscience in 1970's, climaxing with Havel becoming the leader of Czech Velvet Revolution and president of Czechoslovakia in late 1980's. His unorthodox relationship with his wife Olga, who serves as his moral mirror and conscience, propells and echoes Havel's inner growth from young dandy into mature, responsible man as he is put under growing pressure by the totalitarian regime. At first broken by the regime, he raises to admit to his weakness and sets on dangerous journey to redeem his honour and self-respect, leading to life-threatening imprisonment.
