Maria Hofstäetter ha despertado la atención internacional por su papel en Hundstage, de Ulrich Seidl, película por la que se ha llevado el premio a la Mejor interpretación en el Festival Internacional de Gijón. La actriz ha participado también en Poppitz, un spot de gran éxito dirigido por Harald Sicheritz; en Wolfzeit, de Michael Haneke; Twinni de Ulrike Schweiger, y Hurensohn de Michael Sturminger.

"My last film was a big challenge, because I played a mentally handicapped girl. And when we were shooting the film nobody knew that I only was acting. All my colleagues thought that I really was handicapped - and this for four months! My main work is independent theatre in Austria. I act and produce in a small theatre-group and sometimes I work in films. I'm very interested in non-commercial films, in auteur-films... that's what I want to do.
Singing: 'Großer Gott wir loben dich, Herr wir preisen deine Stärke...' and so on and so on... that's it: 'Great Lord we love you and you are the best'".
