Belfast y El poder del perro lideran las nominaciones a los Golden Globes
Belfast, de Kenneth Branagh, y El poder del perro, de Jane Campion

Amidst a controversy sparked by accusations of self-dealing and a sheer lack of diversity and inclusivity among its members, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has announced the nominations for the 79th Golden Globe Awards. The ceremony is set to take place in Los Angeles on 9 January, but at the moment, it doesn’t have a telecast partner owing to the aforementioned issues, even if the association explains that it “has completely overhauled its bylaws, implementing sweeping changes from top to bottom that address ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, membership and more”.

However, the nominations for the awards are out, and they feature several European co-productions and productions. As a matter of fact, the two most-nominated titles of this edition are flying the flag for the continent: Belfast [+lee también:

, British actor-director Kenneth Branagh’s ode to his own childhood, and The Power of the Dog [+lee también:

, the daring psychosexual western by New Zealand’s Jane Campion, which was co-produced by the UK. Both are vying for seven awards, including Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

This year, it's not only the English-language European films that have managed to rack up several nominations, given that Pedro Almodóvar’s latest effort, Parallel Mothers [+lee también:

, is present in two categories: Best Picture Foreign Language and Best Original Score Motion Picture for the work of Alberto Iglesias. As a reminder, in a somewhat reprehensible move, the Spanish Film Academy decided not to submit this title for the race for the Oscar for Best International Picture.

As for Best Picture Foreign Language, Almodóvar’s competitors will be four acclaimed and multi-award-winning titles: Juho Kuosmanen’s Compartment No. 6 [+lee también:

Other European titles have been nominated for one of their talents, such as Pablo Larraín’s German-British title Spencer [+lee también:

(Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for Marion Cotillard, in a disconcerting decision, since the more powerful work in the film by Adam Driver is not nominated). It is worth noting that Spain’s Javier Bardem is also nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, but for his work in the US title Being the Ricardos.

As usual, several co-productions between Europe and the USA have managed to secure nominations, such as Joe Wright’s musical Cyrano [+lee también:

Lastly, in the Television categories, after a European triumph courtesy of The Crown last year (see the news), it's only the French Netflix series Lupin, starring Omar Sy, that is vying for the Award for Best Television Series Drama, while UK-US co-productions The Great and Ted Lasso are nominated for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy, and Tahar Rahim is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, for his work in another Netflix series, the UK’s The Serpent [+lee también:
