The programme of the second edition of the HER Docs Film Festival – to be held in a hybrid format – will include over 100 documentaries, animations and video works, as well as various accompanying events. Among the selected films, The Case You [+lee también:

ficha de la película] by Marija Stonyté and the Polish premiere of Yael Bartana’s Two Minutes to Midnight, in which she invites a group of female experts, diplomats, politicians, lawyers and activists to think about what would happen if women ruled the world.

The festival will also introduce some new sections: Travelogue, Family Album (presenting films in which female directors portray those closest to them), Becoming Oneself, Dreamscape and, finally, Unsettled, the latter focusing on the problem of contemporary migration.

“The themes of the films in the HER Docs Film Festival programme are very diverse,” Adamowska tells Cineuropa. “Of course, as women programmers, we try to talk about topics that are important for women, but we believe that they are important not only for us women, but also for the whole of civil society.” As for the topics covered this year, the audience will get a chance to see stories about former colonies and the situation of independent women journalists in Mexico, plus tales of female pioneers of electronic music and abstract painting.

Noting that even despite its many achievements, the event “can’t count” on support from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage or the Polish Film Institute, Adamowska mentions its new partners, from the City of Warsaw to Swiss Films.

“We are jointly preparing a retrospective of Swiss documentaries and animated films made by women from the last three years,” she says. “This year, for the second time, with the support of, and in collaboration with, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, we are also preparing screenings of video works by female visual artists and an exhibition of video works entitled A Narrow Opening at the Bottom of the Sky.”

With more funding, the scale of the festival has also increased. “This year, we will take place in three cinemas instead of one. We have also increased the number of screenings and festival days. But we are still a group of wonderful and committed young women who work largely on a semi-voluntary basis and devote our free time to HER Docs,” she says.
