It’s under the banner of high quality (“The only quota we consider”), the combination of high and pop culture, and a special focus on young audiences whose “desire to go to the cinema needs to be reawakened” that Rome Film Fest is making its return this year, boasting a 16th edition set to unspool from 14 to 24 October at the Parco della Musica Concert Hall, as well as in many of the capital’s other venues, including the Teatro dell’Opera and Palazzo Merulana. This will be Antonio Monda’s seventh year as artistic director and the second edition he has produced during the pandemic: “Last year we managed to organise a festival of which 90% took place in person, without any new infections”, he affirmed yesterday while presenting the programme in Rome, “our target this year is for 100% of our events to be held in person”.

It’s a bumper programme, with 23 films and documentaries gracing the Official Selection (and battling it out for the Audience Award), 23 participating countries, 22 selected women directors, 35 world premieres, 11 Special Screenings, 13 Close Encounters, and Lifetime Achievement awards earmarked for Quentin Tarantino and Tim Burton. Famous names associated with the Close Encounters line-up include Alfonso Cuarón, who’s set to talk about his favourite Italian films, Luca Guadagnino, discussing the movies which changed his life, Marco Bellocchio, scheduled to reveal a few extracts, in a world premiere, from the Esterno Notte series, which homes in on the Moro affair, and the Manetti Bros., offering up a taster of their much anticipated Diabolik [+lee también:

The Duel event is also set to return, whereby two personalities from the world of film, culture and theatre, wielding different opinions on topics relating to film and its protagonists, are pitted against one another in front of an audience, and the Films of Our Lives line-up will also be making an appearance, featuring movies chosen by members of the festival’s selection committee, this year along the theme of guilty pleasures.

Tributes (to Gigi Proietti, Monica Vitti), restorations (C’eravamo tanto amati by Ettore Scola) and retrospectives (on Arthur Penn) are set to round off the programme, which will likewise showcase five pre-opening films, amongst which I Am Santa Claus [+lee también:
