Filming has kicked off on Terezin, an international co-production between Minerva Pictures and Rai Cinema, in league with Czech firm Three Brothers Production. At the helm of the movie is newcomer Gabriele Guidi who will be behind the cameras for a period of five weeks.
Shot inside the infamous Theresienstadt concentration camp, also known as the Ghetto of Terezin, the film explores a previously unseen side of the lives of Jewish deportees in the early 1940s. These notably included artists and creative minds: scores of composers, painters, sculptors, poets and writers, the heart and soul of central European culture at the time. But what really set Theresienstadt apart was the great number of instrumental musicians, composers and orchestra conductors populating the camp: composers such as Viktor Ullmann, Zikmund Schul, Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Hans Krása and Rudolf Karel all passed through the detention centre, alongside conductors along the lines of Rafael Schächter and musicians like Alice Herz-Sommer, Eric Vogel, Pavel Lipensky and Martin Roman. According to historians, the SS believed the camp to be strategically “useful for propaganda purposes” and, over time, they learned to tolerate the detainees cultural expression, and even to openly welcome it”.
Gabriele Guidi’s film places particular focus on clarinet player Antonio and one particular group of musicians within the ghetto. The cast includes Mauro Conte (Rainbow – A Private Affair [+lee también:
