The third edition of FIFDH Impact Day, the special programme on impact strategy for documentaries at any stage of production, recently announced its 16 selected projects for this year (see the news). The programme, which is taking place from 8-9 March, as part of the 19th Geneva International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH), is also organising the preparatory Impact Lab, an online workshop for its participants, which is running from 27-28 January.

During the Impact Lab, a special webinar is being held focusing on “Filming for Human Rights”, where the discussion will revolve around how non-fiction storytelling can strengthen human rights movements, and contribute to achieving a more just and sustainable world. The online webinar is freely accessible to a restricted number of professionals, and will be held on 27 January from 3 pm-6.30 pm CET. Potential attendees can register here.

The line-up includes leading experts and award-winning filmmakers who will share with the participants their own experiences of how films can change mindsets, behaviours and structures, when put in the right context and connected with strategic changemakers. Film-industry observers will thus learn how they can contribute to the advancement of human rights and social justice.

As for the programme of the webinar, Laura Longobardi, head of Impact Day and partnerships, will welcome the participants, and the keynote opening speech will be given by award-winning producer, professor and StoryShift strategist for Working Films Natalie Bullock Brown on the subject “A Vision for Accountable Storytelling: From Beginning to End”.

Afterwards, Nicole van Schaik, director of development at Doc Society, will give her presentation on “A Pathway to Impact Production”, where she will explore ways to create social or environmental change with a documentary film. She will be followed by the second presentation of the webinar, organised by the team from Skylight, a non-profit human rights media organisation dedicated to advancing social justice through films and media tools applied via long-term strategies. More precisely, Skylight’s executive director and executive producer, Paco De Onis, and its co-founder and creative director, Pamela Yates, will tackle the topic “Cinema as Human Rights Practice”, and they will explain the Skylight model and why filmmakers should not believe people when they tell them that they can’t change the world.

The webinar will be rounded off by a panel discussion on the role of philanthropy in financing film impact production, and the participants are Cara Mertes, project director of the Ford Foundation’s Moving Image Strategies; Willem Lenders, programme officer at the Democracy and Media Foundation; and Josefine Lindström, project manager at the Swedish Postcode Foundation. The discussion will be moderated by Nicole van Schaik.
