Two of the leading German sales companies, The Match Factory and Pluto Film, are ready to participate in the upcoming Cannes Marché du Film, which will run entirely online from 22-26 June. The companies have released their selections, which include upcoming features, market premieres, and films that have already won awards and are looking to extend their festival run and enhance their distribution prospects.

Starting off with Pluto Film, the Berlin-based firm is bringing six titles to the Cannes Virtual Marché. Three of the films are looking for their festival premieres, and the selection includes the sophomore feature by Greek writer-director Michalis Konstantatos (Luton [+lee también:

, which follows a couple on the verge of breaking up who decide to move to a provincial town in the wake of a disaster, although things don’t work out for them. The Greek-Belgian-German-French co-production is being staged by Yorgos Tsourgiannis for Horsefly Productions.

Furthermore, The Tree (South Africa/Netherlands) is the debut feature by Dutch actor and Cannes Cinéfondation Atelier alumnus Louw Venter, a dramatic story set one night in a dangerous neighbourhood in Cape Town, where the lives of random people become intertwined. Another Atelier alumnus, Mongolian writer-director Byamba Sakhya (Remote Control [+lee también:

), is presenting his sophomore feature, Bedridden (Mongolia), which follows a 26-year-old writer who decides to become bedridden to protest about the life that has deprived him of his identity.

The rest of Pluto Film’s slate includes Slovak first-timer Martina Saková’s Summer Rebels [+lee también:

(Germany/Slovakia), which follows young Jonas, who wants to visit his grandpa in Slovakia during the summer, but his mum has other plans (see the report). by Clarisa Navas and the spiritual fantasy-drama Sanctorum by Joshua Gil, round off the slate for the company.

As for The Match Factory, the Cologne-based company will represent a total of three films at the Cannes Virtual Marché, which will all be having their market premieres. The slate is spearheaded by the new comedy by Greek-Cypriot writer-director Yannis Economides (Stratos [+lee también:

, which follows a woman who decides to leave her businessman husband for a nightclub owner and former singer – and she also takes €1 million with her while she’s at it (see the news). The film, which was briefly released in Greece for just one week before being pulled owing to the COVID-19 restrictions, is now being screened in local open-air cinemas, and it was produced by Argonauts Productions.

As for the remaining two titles managed by The Match Factory, both are features that were premiered and won awards at the recent online version of the Tribeca Film Festival: Kokoloko by Gerardo Naranjo, winner of the Best Actor Award for Noé Hernández, and the winner of the Special Jury Mention for the Nora Ephron Award, My Wonderful Wanda [+lee también:
