Pathos is the first instalment in Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel’s latest project. The development process for this feature began back in 2014, with some of the earliest footage dating from that year as well. Pathos was selected by the jury of the ICA’s 2016 feature-film grants contest, but the financing process suffered several delays: as the results of the contest were announced, a group of production houses applied for a precautionary measure that led to the suspension of the jury’s decisions for several months, which then delayed the signing of the contracts (which only happened at the end of March 2017). A week later, a second precautionary measure and a lawsuit against the ICA were issued, which led to yet another suspension of the financing process. The end of this process only came in late April 2018, almost two years after Pathos was selected to receive the ICA grant. This long (and unusual) process transformed Pinto and Leonel’s initial idea: from a single film, Pathos expanded to a whole trilogy, consisting of Pathos, Ethos and Logos [+lee también:

Set in different times, the trilogy’s characters – and their stories – are all connected. Firstly, Pathos is set in 2028, in a world in disarray (but no more or no less than before). It tells the story of Ângela, a retired history teacher who has long lived in voluntary isolation, locked in an apartment in Lisbon. She chooses to host an orphan child, Ruben, in her home and bring him into her life. Ethos, the second part of the trilogy, is set in 2017 and tells the story of Rafaela, a young veterinary assistant who chooses to leave her career behind to be part of Doctors Without Borders. Lastly, Logos is set in 2037 and shows us Ruben (now an adult) as he attempts to reconstruct the final stages of Fabiana’s (his estranged biological mother) pregnancy.

Ângela Cerveira, Rafaela Jacinto, Fabiana Silva, Mariana Monteiro and Telmo Matias are the main cast members of this Avant-Guerre and Presente Lda co-production, which was financed by the ICA and RTP. Pinto and Leonel wrote the script for the entire 186-minute Portuguese trilogy, with Leonel also being responsible for the cinematography and editing.

Pathos is now finished, and the other two parts of the trilogy are in the final stages of post-production and are expected to be completed in the next two or three months. The release date is yet to be announced.
