Yesterday, 30 September, saw the 13th edition of IDS - Italian Doc Screenings - the most long-standing and most popular film market, created and produced by Doc/it – Association of Italian Documentary Makers and devoted to the internationalisation of the Italian documentary form – kick off at Bari’s Cineport hub. , is “Globalizing Doc”, or rather endowing local stories with a level of global significance which can break down national, geographical, political and cultural barriers.

There are 10 finalist projects in IDS Industry’s 2019 Pitching Forum. Among these is La Meraviglia del Mondo by Francesco Lopez (an OZ FILM production), starring Riccardo Scamarcio as the film’s protagonist as he prepares to step into the shoes of Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II, nicknamed “lo Stupor Mundi” (the Wonder of the World). Intrigued by Frederick’s way of thinking, Scamarcio meets leading experts on the Emperor and visits the castles, churches and cities which belonged to him. As he rehearses his part with the other actors, we see his vision and that of Frederick slowly beginning to overlap. There’s also On the road with Susanna Tamaro by Katia Bernardi (GA&A Production), an intimate and light-hearted journey, both physical and symbolic, embarked upon with the author of “Follow Your Heart” (20 million copies sold throughout the world), one of the most widely read Italian writers of all time, who lives with Asperger syndrome. And then there’s Cine Libre - Cinema and graphics in the Cuban revolution by Adolfo Conti and Elia Romanelli (Doc Art), which retraces the birth of the “carteles de cine” movement in Havana in 1959, one of the biggest artistic phenomena of the twentieth century which saw Hollywoodian works ousted from cinemas to be replaced by films coming courtesy of Fellini, Bergman, Truffaut and Kurosawa. Meanwhile, Last Stop Before Chocolate Mountain, by Susanna della Sala (Qoomoon), investigates the exceptional case of Bombay Beach, a supposed ghost town in the Californian desert where an alternative, artistic festival has allowed upper-class American creatives to successfully integrate with the marginalised, local community. Last but not least, we find Radio Amazonia, directed and produced by Alessandro Galassi, a four-part doc-series which tells of the relationship which four indigenous Amazonian communities enjoy with Mother Earth, by way of their community radio.

The other selected titles are After The Bullets by Giuseppe Valentino (Ferula Film), Los Zuluagas [+lee también:

by Flavia Montini (FilmAffair, AAMOD, Inercia Films), Paura e delirio in Italia by Federico Barassi and Cristian Elia Berna (Dinamo Film), So Far So Food by Mattia Fiumani (Dude Originals) and The Mayor by Maurizio Carta and Piergiorgio Curzi (Road Television).

As for conferences on the agenda, these include “Globalizing Doc = Breaking the wall or Burgerdoc?”, a reflection on how online platforms have changed writing, funding and the definition of rights within the documentary genre; “Globalizing Doc = Pubcasters: Get together or die?”, which will examine the role of public broadcasters in the new, global context; and “Globalizing Doc = Does traditional distribution still have a future?”, which will analyse international distribution against the backdrop of internationalised documentaries, as well as potential new synergies with producers.
