Interview with Rea Rajčić, producer for Croatian company Eclectica and selected for the 2020 Emerging Producers programme.

Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?
Rea Rajčić: I became a documentary film producer for the same reason that I decided to be a producer in general – to try to make good stories more visible. And if those stories will have a strong social impact – even better. But I would be also satisfied with creating films that are an instrument of an individual change. That's where everything begins and ends.

What qualities should a documentary producer have these days?
Patience!

What do you think is the future of distribution of documentary films?
Event cinema and streaming platforms. We are living in times of huge changes, but I believe that we are entering an interesting and promising age for the distribution of documentaries. We just need to embrace the change, and not to fight against it or hold onto past distribution practices.  

What projects do you have under way (including in the area of fiction film and other projects)?
I'm currently exploring our lack of ability and skills to detect the real truth in the media (e.g. fake news, deep fake, mockumentaries, social media, marketing, artificial intelligence, etc.). This topic is in focus because of the documentary series that we are currently producing for Croatian Radio Television – Collages of Lies. I am also working on my directorial debut, short documentary called 1001 Nights, following my aunt Ema and her best friend Maja, the biggest fans of Turkish soap operas.
