A Kind of America 2 and 9 and a Half Dates are biggest domestic hits of 2008

Dominated by Phyllida Lloyd’s US/UK/German co-production Mamma Mia!, the 2008 Hungarian box-office rankings place two other European features in the top 10 largely monopolised by US productions such as Madagascar 2 and Indiana Jones 4.

, claims eighth position for the year, closely followed by Gábor Herendi’s Hungarian feature A Kind of America 2. The latter continues to perform well in 2009, as it had garnered 138,503 admissions by Sunday evening (€590,000 in takings).

There is a second Hungarian production in the top 20: Tamás Sas9 and a Half Dates in 15th position.

In the annual ranking of distributors, the top five includes the same companies as 2007, but UIP seizes first position with 30.25% of the market share (22.41% last year), displacing Intercom which slips to second place with 29.88%.

The list also includes Fórum (12.98%), followed by Budapest Film (9.47%) and SPI (4.62%). Clocking in at sixth place is newcomer I.T. Cinema City (4.20%), which outstrips Best Hollywood (3.63%), Hungaricom (1.39%) and Hungarotop (0.73%).
