The title character of Diplodocus is a cute little dinosaur, who is even more curious about the world than his US counterpart, that loveable monkey George. He lives in a very colourful, yet boring, prehistoric swamp and dreams of having a grand adventure. One soon comes along, and Diplodocus, accompanied by a bunch of new, crazy and eccentric friends, will get caught up in a whirlwind of adrenaline and fun. What the dinosaur doesn’t know is that he has a unique power, which will enable him not only to embark on many different adventures, but also to save his prehistoric family.

As writer-director Wojtek Wawszczyk says, Diplodocus, based on the 1980s comic books by Tadeusz Baranowski, is primarily aimed at children. “But the element of nostalgia is obvious for today's 30- or 40-year-olds, who often are also parents, and I care about this intergenerational, shared experience of the film. I’d like adults to have fun watching it and to feel like children again for a while.”

In terms of its style, the movie will combine modern 3D animation with hand-painted elements. The film has been in development since 2012, and as the Polish producer, Human, promises in its press release, it will be the first Polish animation made on such a large scale. “The technology and attention to detail in Diplodocus are not inferior to what we know from contemporary, mainstream animated films. However, what sets us apart is the crazy, original script and artistic solutions taken from the comic book: a baroque richness of forms, surprising character design and a bold colour palette – all of this results in a very attractive effect,” explains Wawszczyk.

His previous feature-length animation, George the Hedgehog, was very popular in the local market and won a clutch of awards outside of Poland, including the Grand Prix at the Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival. Wawszczyk has also worked on animated TV series, such as Casperade, and released his first graphic novel, Mr. Lightbulb, in 2018. It was subsequently translated into English and published in 2022 by Fantagraphics.

Human is the Polish producer of Diplodocus, while PFX (Czech Republic) and Dayhey (Slovakia) are on board as co-producers. The movie is scheduled to be released theatrically in 2023.
