Serbian director Radivoje Andrić's fourth feature, How I Learned to Fly, has topped the local box office following its theatrical release last weekend on 85 prints through distributor Art Vista. After its opening weekend, with 27,422 admissions and gross box-office takings of €97,293, the tally after the first week on release in Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro stands at €127,695 from 37,281 admissions. Notably, the movie beat Sony's Uncharted, 20th Century Fox's Death on the Nile and UIP's Marry Me.

Based on the novel by Jasminka Petrović and penned by screenwriter Ljubica Luković (who also wrote the TV series Awake, which won the Audience Award at CANNESERIES last year), the youth/family film follows 12-year-old Belgrade girl Sofija (charismatic first-timer Klara Hrvanović) as she embarks on a summer holiday with her grandma, Marija (Olga Odanović), to the house on the Croatian island of Hvar, where her extended family headed up by Marija's sister Luca (Snježana Sinovčić) lives.

Even though Sofija is initially lost in the chaotic environment, and would certainly have preferred to go camping with her school mates, who keep posting Instagram photos of themselves having awesome fun, in Hvar, she finds some new friends and maybe even scores that magical first kiss.

Andrić is one of Serbia's biggest hitmakers and has been since the beginning of the 21st century, when his low-budget comedies Dudes (2001) and When I Grow Up, I'll Be a Kangaroo (2004) sold more than 570,000 and 220,000 admissions, respectively, both ending up in the top ten of the box-office charts for that decade.

A co-production between Serbia's Sense Production, Croatia's Kinorama, Bulgaria's Art Fest and Doli Media Studio, and Slovakia's Silverart, the film will be released in all three of the latter territories later this year. When I Learned to Fly was supported by the film funds of all four countries, plus the SEE Cinema Network, Eurimages and Creative Europe – MEDIA.
