Written by the novelist Kaouther Adimi alongside Rachid Bouchareb, the screenplay is said to be inspired by the story of Malik Oussekine, an affair of police violence which is believed to have caused the death of 22-year-old Malik Oussekine on the night of 5-6 December 1986, following several weeks of student protests against a university reform bill.

Nos frangins is produced by Rachid Bouchareb on behalf of 3B Productions, in co-production with France 2 Cinéma, Le Pacte and Wild Bunch. Pre-purchased by France Télévisions, Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature film also enjoys support from the CNC and its Images de la Diversité fund, as well as from the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, the French Gironde and Charente-Maritime departments, and the SOFICA companies Cinémage and Cofinova.
