According to the screenplay, written by Reiné together with Antonio Prieto, at the end of the season, Paula asks her father, Luis, to introduce her to the famous Real Betis player Joaquín, whom he pretends to be good friends with. In turn, Luis leans on his own father, a former boxer, and his mate Lito as he attempts to make his wife, who is now living with her new partner, fall in love with him again. All of these characters, typical of a working-class neighbourhood in Seville, will endure a slew of hilarious misadventures in order to make the little girl’s dream come true.

We talked to Antonio Pérez, a producer from the company Spal Films, who reminded us that, given the health crisis we are currently immersed in, “On shoots at the moment, there are tests that you have to do constantly, and everyone goes around wearing masks. But it poses a huge financial risk, especially if an actor falls ill and they are someone that can’t be replaced, as it’s not covered by the insurance.”

As for Héroes de barrio, Pérez states, “It’s a film about family and self-improvement, given that children are able to exert a huge pull on their parents when it comes to cinemagoing, and the fact is that we have to keep on providing material to the movie theatres because the Americans have stopped doing so. That’s why I would be all for releasing it as soon as possible, as there’s going to be a huge backlog of titles awaiting release. In this film, we have the lure of the football player Joaquín, who has loads of followers on social networks and in the sports dailies,” the producer continues. “It’s an adult-orientated comedy, just your average Spanish film (with a budget of around €2 million), and we hope that people will keep coming back to the cinema, as occurred last weekend in Spain, when the takings were passable,” he sums up.

Héroes de barrio is being produced by Spal Films, Eduardo Campoy and Eduardo Galdo, of Álamo Producciones, and Galdo Media, in conjunction with AIE Palacios Gador. It boasts the involvement of the ICAA, the Andalusian regional government and Canal Sur. Its Spanish distribution will be overseen by A Contracorriente Films, and it will be sold abroad by Latido.
