Rodando páginas. Del libro a las pantallas (lit. “Shooting Pages. From Book to Screens”) is a key annual event for Spanish producers and editors, and will organise its fourth edition – in a hybrid format (or entirely online, depending on how the health crisis unfolds) – on 8 April in Madrid. Once again, its objective is to create synergies between the audiovisual and editorial sectors, fostering the possibility of adapting literary works for the big screen.

A total of 157 books were submitted for the 2021 edition, or double last year’s figure, and they were weighed up by a committee of experts who bore in mind their potential to be adapted for film or television. The titles selected on this occasion are the war novel 15 by David Muñoz and Andrés G Leiva (published by Astiberri, 2021), the compilation of children’s tales Colección Felipe y sus amigos by Gracia Iglesias and Sara Sánchez (Ediciones Jaguar, 2016), the outlandish comedy Gordo de feria by Esther García Llovet (Editorial Anagrama, 2021), the politically engaged work La mujer sin nombre by Vanessa Montfort (Agencia Literaria Antonia Kerrigan, 2020), the story of a friendship cut short La pella by José Ángel Mañas (Alt Autores editorial, 2018), the dramatised historical interview Las guerras correctas by Gabriel Ochoa (Autor Exprés, Fundación SGAE, 2015), the autobiographical tragicomedy Las niñas prodigio by Sabina Urraca (Fulgencio Pimentel, 2016), the erotic vampire story Malasangre by Michelle Roche Rodríguez (Agencia Literaria Dos Passos, 2020), the chronicle of war and society Telefónica by Ilsa Barea-Kulcsar (Agencia Literaria Carmen Balcells), and Vivan los hombres cabales by Guillermo Alonso (Niños gratis, 2019), which portrays the ins and outs of the transvestite world.

This initiative was born in 2018 in order to foster creation through the film adaptations of literary works, thus promoting synergies between the audiovisual and editorial industries. It is intended as a space for highlighting the fact that stories, comic books, novels and countless other types of books can have the opportunity to be brought to various screens (something that the digital platforms are on the lookout for more and more every day).

At past editions, besides various works that are already at an advanced stage of negotiations, deals were inked to adapt the social novel Tea Rooms, mujeres obreras (published by Hoja de Lata), written by Luisa Carnés, an author who formed part of the Generation of ‘27 and who portrayed the lives of Spanish women in the early 20th century; Lamia by Canary Islander Rayco Pulido (Astiberri Ediciones and National Comic Book Award), a thriller featuring a killer on the loose in the miserable and unpleasant Barcelona of the 1940s; the work focusing on a family reunion Una madre by Catalan writer Alejandro Palomas (Destino); Superpatata, a children’s comic featuring the titular hero as the main character, by Artur Laperla (Bang Ediciones), who has had various works published in France (where, in 2019, Julien Rappeneau shot Of Love and Lies [+see also:

, the adaptation of the comic penned by Mario Torrecillas and illustrated by Laperla); and the in-depth study of complex modern-day romantic relationships Feliz final by Seville-born author Isaac Rosa (Seix Barral).

The Rodando páginas rendezvous is organised by the Madrid Audiovisual Association (AMA) and the Federation of Spanish Editors’ Guilds (FGEE). Furthermore, it boasts support from the Community of Madrid, and CEDRO and DAMA have also come on board for the fourth edition.
